Carol's garden

Now that the children had grown up Carol felt she could have the garden she had always wanted the footballs and paddling pools having been replaced with teenage pursuits.

The garden design brief

To design a low maintenance garden to include two patio areas, plenty of lawn and to include space for a shed proposed for the future.

Design Recommendations

The old brick barbeque was demolished and the bricks used to make a retaining wall to the rear of the garden.

The rear patio was extended to allow more room for entertaining and this with the lower patio and existing path were covered with shingle to add cohesion to the garden.  The hedge was underplanted with bulbs and low growing ground cover and the shingle was allowed to drift through to act as a mulch to keep the weeds down.

An evergreen tree Cotoneaster x Watererii ‘John Waterer’ and ‘curly canes’ add height and interest to the border. Annuals were sown between the shrubs and herbaceous perennials to add depth and colour in the first year before the permanent planting fills out.

To the rear were a number of evergreen shrubs which were hard pruned to thicken the hedge and other shrubs and climbers added. These will eventually screen out the view of neighbouring  houses.

We added a small herb garden close to the back door Carol was delighted to be able to add home grown herbs to her favourite recipes as well as enjoying their scents around the patio.

A shed was proposed in the near future for the north corner it’s allotted space was filled with annuals until its arrival.
